Imo State House of Assembly has urged the governor of the State Hope Uzodinma to come to the rescue of some communities in Nkwere LGA who were recently ravaged by flood that rendered many people homeless.
The House made the call following the motion moved by the member representing Nkwerre State Constituency in the State Assembly,Hon. Chisom Ojukwu who told the House that residents of many communities from his Constituency are in pains as they no longer have places of abode due to the flooding.
He informed the House that the recent flooding was caused by heavy rains making the water from neighbouring communities from Njaba and Orlu LGAs respectively to Nkwerre.
Ojukwu lamented that over ten communities were affected and that more will soon be affected, if nothing is done to control the water.
The Lawmaker, narrated that the Iyi Ukwu river which used to contain the waters can no longer control volume of water coming into it due to unwanted substances that have occupied its space making it difficult to absolve the water inflow.
The Nkwerre Lawmaker, pointed out that the only way to remedy the situation is by dredging of the Iyi Ukwu river into a mini lake which he said can make it become a beach resort for tourists.
“Dredging of the Iyi Ukwu river into a mini lake and beach resort will make it become a tourist destination where tourists and fun seekers will be visiting for site seeing and other recreational activities which will also help to shore up the internal revenue of the State.” he said.
He appealed to the Governor to beam his developmental search light on the area.
The House after much deliberations on the motion urged the governor to direct the ministry of works, environment and other relevant bodies to urgently find lasting solution to the flood ravaging the LGA.
